GFAP je usko povezan sa ostala tri člana porodice koji nisu epitelni tip IF, vimentin, dezmin i periferin, koji su svi uključeni u strukturu i funkciju ćelijskog citoskeleta. Smatra se da GFAP pomaže u održavanju mehaničke čvrstoćeastrocita[14] kao i oblik ćelija, ali njegova tačna funkcija ostaje slabo razumljiva, uprkos brojnim studijama koje ga koriste kao ćelijski marker. Protein je imenovao i prvi izolirao i okarakterizirao Lawrence F. Eng, 1969.[15] U ljudi, nalazi se na dugom (q) kraku hromosoma 17.[16]
