Glijski vlaknasti kiseli protein (GFAP) je protein koji je kod ljudi kodiran genom GFAP.[5] To je protein intermedijarnog filamenta tipa III (IF) koji se eksprimira brojnim tipovima ćelija centralnog nervnog sistema (CNS), uključujući astrocite [6] i ependimne ćelije tokom razvoja .[7] Također je utvrđeno da se GFAP eksprimira u glomerulima i peritubulskim fibroblastima iz bubrega pacova,[8] Leydigove ćelije testisa i kod hrčka[9] i ljudi,[10] ljudskih keratinocita,[11]osteocita i hondrocita[12] i zvjezdanih ćelija pankreasa i jetre kod pacova.[13]

GFAP je usko povezan sa ostala tri člana porodice koji nisu epitelni tip IF, vimentin, dezmin i periferin, koji su svi uključeni u strukturu i funkciju ćelijskog citoskeleta. Smatra se da GFAP pomaže u održavanju mehaničke čvrstoće astrocita [14] kao i oblik ćelija, ali njegova tačna funkcija ostaje slabo razumljiva, uprkos brojnim studijama koje ga koriste kao ćelijski marker. Protein je imenovao i prvi izolirao i okarakterizirao Lawrence F. Eng, 1969.[15] U ljudi, nalazi se na dugom (q) kraku hromosoma 17.[16]
