Trichophyton és un gènere de fongs hialins dermatòfits que sol parasitar els teixits queratinitzats (pell, pèls, plomes o ungles). Segons el seu hàbitat primari els dermatòfits es classifiquen com geofílics (associats al sòl), zoofílics (als animals no humans) i antropofílics (al ésser humà).[1] Diverses espècies de Trichophyton són la causa més comuna de la infecció en humans anomenada tinya,[2] algunes d'elles zoonòtiques.[3] És freqüent que aquests fongs siguin patògens oportunistes.[4] En certs casos, poden ocasionar fol·liculitis cutània[5] o blefaritis.[6] Múltiples soques d'una única espècie del gènere poden infectar el mateix hoste.[7]
