Ο NGC 679 είναι ελλειπτικός[3][4][5] ή φακοειδής γαλαξίας[6][4][5] ο οποίος απέχει 210 εκατομμύρια έτη φωτός από το Ηλιακό Σύστημα[6] και βρίσκεται στον αστερισμό Ανδρομέδα. Τον ανακάλυψε ο αστρονόμος Ουίλιαμ Χέρσελ (William Herschel) στις 13 Σεπτεμβρίου 1784[7] και ανήκει στο σμήνος γαλαξιών Abell 262.[8][9][10][11][12]
Πρόκειται για ραδιογαλαξία[13] που περιβάλλεται από δίσκο σκόνης διαμέτρου περίπου 9,800 ly (3 kpc).[3]
