Bessie Woodson Yancey (May 1882 – 11 January 1958)[1] was an African-American poet, teacher, and activist,[1] whose only published poetry collection, 1939's Echoes from the Hills, was, according to Katherine Capshaw Smith, "perhaps the earliest example of Affrilachian children's literature."[2].
