Byng Arts Mini School is a School District 39 Vancouver Mini School program[1] and is located at Lord Byng Secondary School in West Point Grey in Vancouver, British Columbia.[2] The Byng Arts Mini School, established in 1999, is a competitive application program for students pursuing a dedicated track in fine arts. Successful applicants are required to demonstrate a strong academic achievement and excellence in the arts with the process being compared to university admissions.[3][4]
As a school-within-a-school, Byng Arts, offers the same benefits of a large high-school, while also maintaining a sense of peer community among arts students. Byng Arts students specialize in one of the following areas: Band, Choir, Drama, Media Arts, Strings, or Visual Arts, and attend several of their academic classes including English and Social Studies together as a cohort.[2]
In addition to an enhanced curriculum, all students in Byng Arts participate in events that feature community artists, musicians and performers, thereby strengthening the collaboration between Byng and the professional arts community.[5]<
Byng Arts Mini School is one of twenty-two mini schools in Vancouver.[6][7] The school's programs gained further attention as music programs in schools have been steadily cut over the past two decades across the country.[8]
