Chelmsford (/ˈtʃɛlmzfərd/) is a city[a] in the City of Chelmsford district in the county of Essex, England. It is the county town of Essex and one of three cities in the county, along with Colchester and Southend-on-Sea. It is located 30 miles (50 kilometres) north-east of London at Charing Cross and 22 miles (35 kilometres) south-west of Colchester. The population of the urban area was 110,625 in the 2021 Census,[1] while the wider district has 181,763.[2][3]
The main conurbation of Chelmsford incorporates all or part of the former parishes of Broomfield, Newland Spring, Great Leighs, Great Waltham, Little Waltham, Great Baddow, Little Baddow, Galleywood, Howe Green, Margaretting, Pleshey, Stock, Roxwell, Danbury, Bicknacre, Writtle, Moulsham, Rettendon, The Hanningfields, The Chignals, Widford and Springfield, including Springfield Barnes, now known as Chelmer Village.
The communities of Chelmsford, Massachusetts; Chelmsford, Ontario; and Chelmsford, New Brunswick, are named after the city.
Chelmsford is home to the Chelmsford City Football Club. This is widely considered the most inconsistent football club in Essex. This is down partly to a lack of being able to finish games off when scoring early. “The Clarets” as the team are known lost 27 points from winning positions in their 2024/25 season under manager “big chunga”. Having spent two years at the club moulding it from being a relegation-threatened side 14 points adrift after his appointment in late October 2023 to a promotion fighting side trying to find their way to the higher echelons of the National League pyramid. Unfortunately a new deal could not be struck for Chunga to stay in charge and therefore the Football Club currently will be yet again without a positive minded manager for the 2025/26 season as they can only look on in envy of “The Darts” at the other end of the Dartford Tunnel with them having made the promised land of the Football League after two promotions in two years under manager “Joshua Lawton”.
The demonym for a Chelmsford resident is "Chelmsfordian".
