American media franchise
John Wick is an American neo-noir crime action film series and media franchise created by Derek Kolstad . It centers on the titular character portrayed by actor Keanu Reeves . Wick is a legendary hitman who is reluctantly drawn back into the criminal underworld after retiring. The franchise began with the release of John Wick in 2014, followed by three sequels: Chapter 2 in 2017, Chapter 3 – Parabellum in 2019, and Chapter 4 in 2023,[ 1] [ 2] and expanding to include various spin-offs : the comic book series John Wick: The Book of Rules published from 2017 to 2019, the limited series The Continental: From the World of John Wick , released in 2023, and the film From the World of John Wick: Ballerina , to release in 2025,[ 3] all sequels and spin-offs incorporating elements of alternate history .
The films have received critical acclaim, and have been considered one of the greatest action film series of all time.[ 4] [ 5] [ 6] [ 7] Many critics and publications consider the first film,[ a] as well as Chapter 4 ,[ 25] [ 26] [ 27] as two of the greatest action films ever made. The films have earned a collective gross of more than $1 billion worldwide.[ 28]
Chad Stahelski, Basil Iwanyk, and Erica Lee serve in oversight roles for the John Wick franchise. 87Eleven Productions produces the franchise in collaboration with Thunder Road Studios and Lionsgate.[ 29]
