Kabul University (KU ; د کابل پوهنتون/دانشگاه کابل )[ 2] [ 3] [ 4] [ 5] [ 6] [ 7] is one of the major and oldest institutions of higher education in Afghanistan . It is in the 3rd District of the capital Kabul near the Ministry of Higher Education . It was founded in 1931 by King Mohammed Nadir Shah , whose prime minister at the time was his younger brother, Sardar Mohammad Hashim Khan . Approximately 22,000 students attend Kabul University. In August 2021, before the Taliban takeover , nearly half were female.[ 8]
Since December 2022, Kabul University has been closed to women, like other public universities in Afghanistan, to comply with the Taliban's education ban on women.[ 9] [ 10] In March 2023, women protested outside of the university's entrance by reading their books.[ 9]
