Shahrud (Persian: شاهرود , also written as: shahrood , shahroud)[a] is a city in the Central District of Shahrud County, Semnan province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district.[4] The residents of Shahrood aspire to separate from the province and establish a new province named Shahvar. This ambition is fueled by their larger population and more significant urban development compared to other cities. Additionally, they advocate for the activation of their international airport, which currently remains non-operational due to a lack of available aircraft.[citation needed]
