This template is used on approximately 3,900 pages and changes may be widely noticed. Test changes in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in your own user subpage. Consider discussing changes on the talk page before implementing them.

When copying material from one Wikipedia article to another, you can put this template on the talk page of both articles, to indicate that its page history contains the attribution to Wikipedian contributors of the material that lies elsewhere.

Notes also need to be put in edit summaries of both articles; see Wikipedia:Splitting#Procedure.

Usage

Do not wikilink |to= and |from= — these are automatically linked for you.

The |to= and |date= fields are required. If |to= is not provided, the template will refuse to show its usual text.

The |from=, |from_oldid=, and |diff= fields are optional, but using them makes it easier for readers and editors to trace the split. Where the page was created with the split material as the first edit, the diff parameter cannot be accessed in the normal radio button, comparison mode in the page history. Instead, navigate to the permanent link for the first edit, and copy the "oldid". For example, where the end of the URL is &oldid=271444811, the revisionid is 271444811. When using two revisionids, the oldid should be first, followed by a slash and the diff. If you have trouble using the revisionids, you can use the whole URL.

This template can be placed on the talk page of the article that was split and the talk page of the new article receiving the split content. When placing the template on the new article receiving the split content, provide the |from= parameter for proper attribution. If the receiving article already had content, you may wish to use {{Merged-from}}, instead.

Multiple splits

Additional splits from the same article can be specified by adding a number after each variable, so the second split would use |to2=, |date2=, |from_oldid2= and |diff2= and so on:

The template can support any number of splits, as long as the numbers that go after each parameter are consecutive. If |to3= is provided but |to2= is not, only |to1= will show up.

The |collapse= parameter can be used to collapse some or all of the listed items. Set |collapse=yes to collapse all items, or |collapse=4 to hide all entries below |date4= for instance.
