Xun Yu (163–212),[1][2] courtesy name Wenruo, was a Chinese military official and politician who served as an adviser to the warlord Cao Cao during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China.

  1. ^ a b c Xun Yu's biography in Records of the Three Kingdoms stated that he died at the age of 50 by East Asian age reckoning in the year Jian'an 17 (c. 212) during the reign of the Xian Emperor of Han. ([建安]十七年, ... 以憂薨,時年五十。) By calculation, his birth year should be around 163. Cao Cao's biography in Sanguozhi recorded that he led a campaign against Sun Quan (公征孫權) in the 10th month of that year (12 Nov to 10 Dec 212 in the Julian calendar). Since Xun Yu's biography also mentioned that he was sent to reward soldiers who took part in that campaign, he must have died in or after that month; the year ends on 7 Feb 213.
