Le WWE Intercontinental Championship est un championnat de catch appartenant à la fédération de catch américaine, la World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Le titre a été intronisé pour la première fois dans la WWE en 1979, à l'époque connue sous le nom de World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Pat Patterson, qui était l'actuel champion WWF North American Heavyweight Championship, a unifié le titre au South American Heavyweight Championship[1],[2]. La WWF a considéré l'Intercontinental Championship comme étant le second championnat le plus important de la compagnie, après le WWF Championship[3]. En 2002, la WWF est renommée World Wrestling Entertainment. Après avoir changé de nom, le titre est renommé WWE Intercontinental Championship[4]. Le tout premier champion détenant ce titre était Pat Patterson, qui a gagné le championnat en 1979.
Le titre connait actuellement 187 règnes, pour un total de 91 champions différents, et fut également vacant 10 fois.
