Standard Average European (SAE) è un concetto introdotto dal linguista statunitense Benjamin Lee Whorf negli anni quaranta del XX secolo, nel suo volume The Relation of Habitual Thought and Behavior to Language[1], per indicare un gruppo di moderne lingue europee appartenenti alla famiglia dell'Indoeuropeo.
