The Day the Earth Stood Still is een Amerikaanse zwart-witte sciencefictionfilm uit 1951 onder regie van Robert Wise met in de hoofdrollen Michael Rennie en Patricia Neal.

Het scenario voor de film is gebaseerd op het korte verhaal Farewell to the Master (1940) van Harry Bates, gepubliceerd in het SF-tijdschrift Astounding Science-Fiction. De prent geldt als een van de invloedrijkste SF-films, niet alleen van de jaren vijftig, maar ook daarna.

De film werd door de kritiek geprezen en was een bescheiden succes in de bioscopen. De totale omzet in de VS en Canada in 1951 was 1.850.000 dollar (op een budget van 1.250.000 dollar). In 1995 werd The Day the Earth Stood Still geselecteerd voor conservatie in de National Film Registry van de Library of Congress vanwege het culturele, historische en esthetische belang.
