The municipality is dividit intae the barrios o Bayate, Carambola, Frías, Lomas, Pasto Rico, Pueblo, Pueblo Nuevo, Punta Brava, Río Hondo, San Juan de Contreras, San Juan del Norte an Las Terrazas.^[1]

It wis foondit in 1809, an established as a municipality in 1880.^[1]
