Avant-garde metal (also known as experimental metal or avant-metal) is a type of heavy metal music. It uses many things from experimental music, such as sounds, instruments, and ways of playing music that are not normal. Avant-garde metal is inspired by progressive rock and extreme metal. It sounds similar to progressive metal.
Avant-garde metal started as a type of death metal.[1] Some metal musicians wanted to experiment with their music. They were inspired by progressive rock.[2] Some of the first avant-garde metal bands were Celtic Frost, Meshuggah, Sunn O))), Boris, Voivod and Helmet.[3][4][5]
Early arrivals were able to see experimental metal pioneers Helmet as well as retro punks the Casualties.
