Beaufort (pronounced /ˈboʊfərt/ ) is a town in Carteret County , North Carolina , United States . It was established in 1722, which makes it the fourth-oldest town in North Carolina .[ 1] [ 2]
In 2020, 4,464 people lived in Beaufort.[ 3] The town is the county seat of Carteret County .[ 4] It is sometimes confused with Beaufort in South Carolina . However, the two names are pronounced differently.
Beaufort is in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. The North Carolina Maritime Museum is in Beaufort.
