In the Duhok Governorate in the Kurdistan Region of northern Iraq, the Turkish Armed Forces conducted Operation Claw-Eagle 2, an air and ground operation against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
Turkey claims that it was started in order to rescue Turkish captives held by the PKK, safeguard the border between Turkey and Iraq, and eradicate the PKK from the region.
The Secretary expressed condolences for the deaths of Turkish hostages in northern Iraq and affirmed our view that PKK terrorists bear responsibility.
