Trimurti

Trimurti

The Hindu trinity of three gods (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) may be referred to as Trimurti.

The Trimurti is a Hindu concept that refers to the three main deities in Hinduism: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva:

  • Brahma The creator, Brahma is depicted with four heads and four arms. He is considered uncreated, infinite, and all-embracing.
  • Vishnu The preserver, Vishnu is the god of light and enlightenment. He is depicted with four arms and an avatar.
  • Shiva The destroyer, Shiva is often depicted dancing and with four arms. He is also depicted with a drum, a flame, a necklace of cobra snakes, and a pen.

The word trimurti means "three forms". The three gods represent different aspects of Brahman, the Ultimate Reality, and are responsible for the creation, preservation, and destruction of the world. They are the foundation of Hindu belief and practice, guiding the Universe through its cycles.

The Om symbol of Hinduism is considered to allude to the Trimurti, with the A, U, and M phonemes representing creation, preservation, and destruction. Shiva's trident also represents the Trimurti.
