Óscar Loureda Lamas (1974, Abegondo, La Coruña) is a professor of Linguistics, Translation, and Communication of the Spanish language at Heidelberg University and a corresponding member of the Cuban Academy of Language, as well as an honorary professor at the University of the Pacific in Peru.

He began his studies in Hispanic Philology at the University of La Coruña in 1992, completing them in 1997 with an extraordinary award. Four years later, in 2001, he defended his doctoral thesis titled Análisis de las estructuras lexemáticas del metalenguaje de la lengua: los nombres de los tipos de texto en el español actual.

He worked as a professor at the University of La Coruña from 2001 to 2008. Simultaneously, from 2005 to 2007, he was a researcher at the University of Tübingen with a postdoctoral fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 2008, was appointed professor of Translation in the Spanish language at Heidelberg University, where he directed the Institute of Translation and Interpretation (2010-2014) and the Galician Studies Center from 2011 to date.

In the same year, he founded the Center for Ibero-American Studies, now known as the Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS), serving as deputy director between 2019 and 2023. He has also been a visiting professor at the Universities of Panama, Cádiz, and Granada. Between 2011 and 2015, he was vice-president of the German Association of Hispanists (Deutscher Hispanistenverband), and between 2015 and 2019, he took on the role of president.

He is currently the deputy director of the Revista Internacional de Lingüística Iberoamericana, as well as a member of the scientific committee of several journals, such as Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, Journal of Spanish Language Teaching, Revista del Instituto de Lengua y Cultura Española-RILCE, Normas, Signos, Estudios de Lingüística de la Universidad de Alicante-ELUA, and Spanish in context, among others.

He has played a prominent role in quality assurance with agencies in Spain, Chile, Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. He served as Vice-Rector for Development and Quality at Heidelberg University between 2013 and 2019. To date, he is a member of the National Accreditation Council (Akkreditierungsrat) of Germany and the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation (Agentur für Qualitätssicherung und Akkreditierung) of Austria. He has also been a consultant and evaluator of quality assurance programs and has advised various international organizations, particularly in Ibero-America.

His research focuses on communication and discourse. In addition to international research projects in the field of experimental pragmatics, he has conducted studies on semantics, phraseology, text grammar, and the social aspects of Spanish, with special attention to Spanish as a migration and heritage language. He has supervised a dozen doctoral theses in these research areas and has published nearly thirty monographs as an author or editor.
